The field of Old Testament studies reflects the history of Western scholarship by connecting dimensions that are otherwise now treated separately. It is pursued as a unified discipline encompassing philology, history, and theology. Based on the Hebrew and Aramaic sources of the Israelite and early Jewish writings of the Old Testament, it contributes to the understanding of the literature, history, and especially the religious history of Israel and early Judaism within the context of Near Eastern cultures. As a theological discipline, it contributes these findings to the interdisciplinary discourse of theology. Stones, texts, and history thus contribute to answering the fundamental questions of theology concerning God, the world, and humanity. Hermeneutics and methodology are reflected upon in dialogue with philosophical hermeneutics and with philological and historical methodological discussions. The exegetical competence of pastors, religious education teachers, and master’s students is a crucial educational goal of the academic training of Protestant theologians.
