Scientific Network Historiography of Mission (NHM)

The NHM scientific network brings together 16 researchers from different parts of the world. Our work focuses on concepts, methods, and politics of historiography on Christian missions in the 19th and 20th centuries — drawing on Critical Studies (including Postcolonial and Decolonial Studies, Critical Whiteness Studies, Queer Studies, etc.)

Our goal is to provide a solid foundation for critical research and work on colonialism, mission and its effects on contemporary discourses (including practices and materialies) on power assymetries in the framework of a global religous history.

Our research network brings together voices from both the Global South and the Global North. We prioritize gender balance and embrace disciplinary, ecumenical and denominational diversity, with participants spanning the globe—from New York (USA) to Qingdao (China)—our community reflects a truly international outlook, ensuring a broad and inclusive dialogue.

NHM organizes regular online conferences (7–9 half-day meetings) and two one-week in-person meetings in Neuendettelsau (Germany) and Makumira (Tanzania).

As part of the project, we are developing a working book that introduces and discusses different theoretical and methodological approaches that critically reflect on mission historiography and open new perspectives.
